Art Installation is a “PLAY” Words on Senior Henry Barron’s art installation includes the word “PLAY” in blue painters tape at three locations throughout Mars Area High School. The letters appear two-dimensional over a threedimensional space. Mars Area High School senior Henry Barron had an inspired idea for a new art installation at the high school. In his French IV class, Barron was asked to choose a French artist to study and he selected George Rousse, who paints twodimensional words and objects on threedimensional spaces. “I really liked what Rousse did with his art and how he created his illusion on buildings and on walls,” explains Barron. He then took what he learned in French class and translated the technique into his own artwork. Barron created the word “PLAY” using blue painter’s tape (in lieu of actual paint) at three different locations throughout the Mars Area High School. “It is meant to be a ‘play’ on words and the many contractions and meanings of the word in both noun and verb form,” says Barron. The first “PLAY” was placed at the entrance to the auditorium, where the school held its fall play and hosts numerous musical performances. The second was located in the athletics stairwell paying homage to the playing of school sports and activities. The third sign is in the hallway near the entrance to the Child Development classrooms, where children in Planet Preschool learn and play. Once he started the project, the process of applying the tape was easy, but getting everything lined up was much more difficult according to Barron, noting that the auditorium “PLAY” took more than three hours to complete. Barron’s interest in art is expected to continue throughout the school year and beyond. Postgraduation, he plans to attend college as an industrial design major with an emphasis on art. “I enjoy having my artwork up for people to look at... and to get them interested in art,” says Barron. “It’s nice to have them see what I can do as well as what the school’s art program can offer.” FBL A M em bers cKeespor t ARS AREA MA RS ARE A SC H OOL DI STR IC C ity of Mc Keesport N ews T News Compete at Regional Conference Mars Area seniors Maggie Sarver, Noah Bezaire and Nick DeCamp (not pictured) qualified for the FBLA State Leadership Conference to be held April 7-9. 42 Mars Area Several members of Mars Area High School’s FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Chapter competed in the 2013-2014 FBLA Regional Leadership Conference in December.
