5TH ANNUAL EMMAUS SPIRIT RUN COSTUME 5K & 1-MILE FUN WALK
Put away your everyday running gear and get into the Halloween spirit at the 5th Annual Emmaus Spirit Run Costume 5k & 1-Mile Fun Walk on Saturday , Oct . 20 . The chipped 5k loops around the scenic Three Rivers Heritage Trail with the start and finish line in the South Shore Riverfront Park in the heart of the South Side Works . A family-friendly 1-mile fun walk along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail is also available . The race kicks off at 8:30 a . m . Strollers are welcome !
This event offers prizes for overall and age-level winners , a spirited costume contest and post-race family fun , including pumpkin painting , Halloween crafts , photo booth , food and drinks , raffles and more ! All proceeds benefit the Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh , which provides homes , services and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities . STEPHEN MINISTRY WORKSHOP
On Saturday , Sept . 29 , St . John Neumann Roman Catholic Church ( 2230 Rochester Road , 15237 ) will host a Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop from 9 a . m . to 1 p . m . Registration begins at 8 a . m . Light refreshments will be served .
This workshop is designed to help congregations learn about starting a caring ministry by equipping laypeople as caregivers to help others journey during difficult times of their lives . The cost of this workshop is $ 15 per person or $ 50

UPCOMING EVENTS WITH GREYBROOK GARDEN CLUB
Greybrook Garden Club , whose members reside in various communities of the North Hills , will meet Wednesday , Sept . 12 , at 9:30 a . m . in the Fellowship Hall of Parkwood United Presbyterian Church , located at 4289 Mt . Royal Boulevard in Allison Park . Following the business meeting and a brief time to enjoy refreshments and fellowship , Penn State Master Gardener Bill Goff will present “ Perennials – Three Seasons of Color in the Garden .” Guests are requested to come at 10:30 a . m . for refreshments and the program .
The club will also hold a Garage Sale at the church on Saturday , Oct . 6 , from 8 a . m . to noon . Proceeds from this sale help support the club ’ s annual donations to conservancy groups and worthy community and charitable organizations . HERE ’ S TO 101 ! ST . JOHN COMMUNITY CELEBRATES RESIDENT ’ S 100TH BIRTHDAY
Frances Hartung has always been a firm believer in exercising kindness throughout her life . On June 8 , generosity repaid her when St . John honored the Edgewood Grove resident with a surprise party celebrating her 100th birthday .
Pam Berbach , registered nurse at St . John , has been caring for Frances since April but explained how the centenarian has already taught her so much . “ What I love most about Frances is the education she teaches ,” Berbach says . “ She ’ s so dignified , and if people would just take the time to sit and listen to her , they would learn so much .”
Hartung , a longtime Mars resident and retired school teacher , was completely caught off-guard by the event . “ I had no idea they were going to do that ,” Hartung confesses . “ I didn ’ t deserve it .”
If Hartung wasn ’ t humble enough , she expressed the need for nothing in return for making it to a century . “ I ’ m content with what I have ,” she says . “ I ’ ve been blessed in more ways than anyone .”
Hartung concluded that she owes her longevity to her enduring faith in God .
