Baseball Team Ends Season in
PIAA Playoffs
Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Baseball Team ended the 2016 regular season with an overall record of 12-5 and 10-2 in section play, earning the Section 5-AAA title.
The Fightin’ Planets advanced to first round of the 2016 PIAA Boys Varsity Baseball Class AAA Championships on June 6, but were defeated 13-2 by the Erie Cathedral Prep Ramblers. The team quashed the Knoch Knights 3-1 in the 2016 WPIAL Boys Varsity Baseball Class AAA Third Place Consolation Final on June 1, earning third place in WPIAL play and a spot in the PIAA playoffs.
The Planets were conquered 6-1 by the Chartiers Valley Colts in the WPIAL semifinals on May 24, but vanquished the Hopewell Vikings 3-0 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on May 19 and squashed the Indiana Little Indians 6-2 in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs on May 16.

Softball Team Ends Season in
WPIAL Playoffs
Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Softball Team ended the 2016 regular season with an overall record of 9-7 and 7-3 in section, tying for second place in Section 5-AAA.
The Lady Planets advanced to the first round of the 2016 WPIAL Girls Varsity Softball Class AAA Championships on May 18, but were defeated 4-1 by the Beaver Bobcats.
Outstanding players on this year’ s team included seniors Bailey Campbell, Mallory Eperesi, Katelyn Hoover, Blake Kitt and Niki Schlegel; junior Marina Manuppelli; and sophomores Isabella Berkopec, Jordyn Douglas, Lindy Lee, Ellie Marsh, Maggie Olshenske and Kara Rodriguez.

Mars Area High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team won its first WPIAL title,

defeating the Hampton Talbots 15-10 in the final game of the 2016 WPIAL Boys Varsity Lacrosse Division II Championship on May 27.
The Fightin’ Planets trounced the Moon Area Tigers 15-11 in the WPIAL semifinals on May 23 and tamed the Latrobe Wildcats 18-3 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on May 18. The team ended the 2016 regular season with an overall record of 15-1 and 6-0 in section play, earning the Division II Section 4 title.

Mars Area High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team ended the 2016 regular season with an overall record of 13-3 and 10-0 in section play, earning the Division II Section 3 title.
The Lady Planets advanced to the final game of the 2016 WPIAL Girls Varsity Lacrosse Division II Championship on May 26, but were defeated 7-5 by the Blackhawk Cougars. The team grounded the Bethel Park Blackhawks 9-7 in the WPIAL semifinals on May 24 and stopped the Hempfield Spartans 21-6 in the WPIAL quarterfinals on May 18.
Outstanding players on this year’ s team included seniors Erin Bissett, Camille Cipkins, Rachel DeSantes, Shannon Doyle, Eden Fletcher, Margaret Manjerovic, Lilly Marcoux, Kelly O’ Connell, Chloe Panza, Jordan Pearce, Charla Tate, Meghan Totzke and Sara Weiss; junior Cassianna Buzzelli; sophomore Landri Shannan; and freshmen Gianna Buzzelli and Emily Grieco.

Students Set Track & Field
Records at Annual Event
Mars Area Middle School students set records in several events at the school’ s annual Track & Field Day on May 26.
Eighth-grader Jake Richardson earned a time of 16.81 in the 110-Meter Hurdles, setting a new school record. Eighthgrader Zach Leachman set records in the 800-Meter Run and 1,600-Meter Run, with times of 2:18.52 and 5:06.10, respectively.
Eighth-grader Drew Schlegel jumped a distance of 21 feet, 2 inches in the Long
Jump, breaking the former school record by more than 2 feet.
Seventh-graders Ellie Coffield, Madeline Gagnon, Elizabeth Long and Megan Smith set a record with 4:50.67 in the 1,600-Meter Relay. Coffield also set the time to beat( 2:32.79) in the 800-Meter Run.
Seventh-grader Julia Maple set the record in the Triple Jump with 29 feet, 10 inches. Seventh-grader Emilee Waldrop leaped 15 feet, 11 inches, setting a new record in the Long Jump.
The school’ s annual Track & Field Day asks students to compete in a variety of events. The students’ scores are compared to records from previous years.

Track Team Members Compete
at WPIAL Championship
Several members of Mars Area High School’ s Boys & Girls Varsity Track & Field Team competed in the 2016 WPIAL Class AAA Track & Field Individual Championships, held May 19 at Baldwin High School.
On the boys team, junior Jimmy Hibbard took fifth place with a time of 50.36 in the 400-Meter Dash. Hibbard also participated in the High Jump, but did not place.
The team of senior Cole Bradley; juniors Jimmy Hibbard, Justin Petrilena and Trent Williams; sophomore Chris Check; and freshman Christopher Graham earned 12th place( 3:31.06) in the 4x400- Meter Relay. The team of seniors Andrew Diefenbacher and Nathan Mrdjenovich and freshmen John Zervos and Connor Volk-Klos took 12th place( 8:26.80) in the 4x800-Meter Relay.
On the girls team, junior Sammy Papik earned fifth place( 46.39); junior Sofia Beltran, sixth place( 46.65); and sophomore Kinsley Bitzer, 21st place( 49.52) in the 300-Meter Hurdles. Sophomore Kinsley Bitzer received 14th place( 15.68) in the preliminary round of the 100-Meter Hurdles.
Junior Tori Kopchak earned 11th place( 59.72) in the 400-Meter Dash and sophomore Sophia Von Schwandewede tied for 17th place( 4 feet, 9 inches) in the High Jump. The team of juniors Sofia Betran, Brittany Dean, Annabel Hnath and Tori Kopchak and freshman Amelia Haley earned 12th place( 4:08.37) in the 4x400-Meter Relay.
