VARIETIES TALENT SHOW CELEBRATES 90
YEARS OF SHOWCASING STUDENTS’ TALENTS
UPCOMING EVENTS
The year was 1928. Mickey Mouse made his debut on the cartoon “Steamboat Willie”
that fall. The first Trans-Pacific flight, from Oakland, California to Brisbane, Australia,
was a success and pilot Charles Lindbergh received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in the United Kingdom. The first winter
Olympic games were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
And, at Dormont High School, students and staff produced the first Varieties Talent
Show, an event that would continue annually for the next 90 years and would become
one of Keystone Oaks School District’s most
popular traditions.
“Whether you participated or not, everyone
remembers the Varieties Talent Show from their
days at either Dormont or Keystone Oaks High
School,” said current director, Nancy Kraemer.
“There is so much excitement surrounding the
show each year because it is such a fun way to
showcase our students’ artistic talents, whether it’s
singing, dancing, playing an instrument, acting, or
martial arts - we’ve seen it all over the years.”
Yearbooks from the 1930s describe Varieties as
a Stage Show with a master of ceremonies and
acts representing various school departments and
organized clubs. While Varieties has maintained
the “stage show” format over the years, it has
morphed to feature performances by individuals
and groups of students who audition for the
show. A group of students act as the master
of ceremonies, injecting humor and acting in
between segments of the show.
This year, all past participants in the Varieties
Talent Show are invited to take part in a special
performance as part of the Saturday, November
10 production. Prior to the show, alumni are
invited to a private reception and tour of Keystone
Oaks High School. Alumni who are interested in
participating should RSVP to keystoneoakspr@
