Founded in 2011, YSWPCS’s mission is to teach multiple critical world languages with an emphasis on STEM and digital media programs in its comprehensive curriculum for grades K-8 by providing a learning environment enhanced by individualized education approaches and technology while promoting international education on a broader scale to prepare students for globalized society. Mr. Targut, the school’s principal, said YSWPCS presents students with opportunities they can’t find anywhere else. “We offer a STEM-based digital media program for learners of all abilities, two world languages starting in kindergarten, personalized education for students through our advanced use of technology,” he said. “All of this is provided in one of the most multicultural and safe settings around. We also have free extended-school-day programs, tutoring clubs, a full-day kindergarten program, and foster strong school/home partnerships with our parents.” Rachel Majcher, PTO President, said families are included in almost every aspect of the school with opportunities to fit every schedule. “We have multiple events during the school year set up by staff that include families, from our beginning-of-the-year picnic, where they meet all the staff and find out what’s new for the school year, to our book fairs throughout the year, and family night,” she said. “Parents can be as involved as they like in the classroom as well, from chaperoning a field trip to planning or assisting with an activity in any classroom. They can even form an after-school club if they like. We encourage this openness so we’re not setting up walls between the classrooms. We’re all one big family.” Karrie Bender, Secretary of the Board and parent of two children in the school, said YSWPCS’s diverse and global focus was the reason she decided to send her kids there. “My sons know more about the countries of the world and their cultures than I do,” she said. “The school fosters a global perspective and develops citizens of the world as well as gives them the technological and academic tools they’ll need to thrive in that world.” With small class sizes limited to 20 students and 320 students in all, YSWPCS has not only met and exceeded benchmarks in all state testing, it actively raises the bar year after year by adding new and exciting academic programs to better prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s world.
