“We are small enough that the residents
really get to know each other. I think for
most, their friends here are like second
families. They look out for each other.”
The holiday season invariably is the best time
of year for family gatherings.
I
t is also often a time of year when aging parents and adult
children realize that it may be time for the parents to break
away from the maintenance, expense and responsibilities of
home ownership.
Ann Soroka, Marketing Coordinator
for The Commons at Stonebrook
Village—a 31-unit independent-living
apartment complex operated by
Lutheran SeniorLife in McCandless
Township—confirms that the post-
holiday season is one of the busiest
times of the year for inquiries.
“Adult children are with Mom
and Dad during the holidays, and
even though they may not yet need
assistance, families begin to recognize
that it may be time to take a step away
from home ownership and to move
into a maintenance-free lifestyle,” she
says.
The Commons is a relatively small complex, which has a lot of
appeal to seniors who are downsizing.
“We are small enough that the residents really get to know
each other,” explains Soroka. “I think for most, their friends here
are like second families. They look out for each other. It’s very
heartwarming to see.”
No maintenance, light housekeeping and one
meal a day when they all gather, and utilities
being included in the rent, are all very important
elements to making The Commons so attractive.
The setting is another feature residents
appreciate. Mature trees surround the community
and a meandering stream behind it creates a picturesque scene
that draws rave reviews from visitors.
The Commons is minutes from several local shopping centers.
Transportation is offered for a weekly shopping trip, and many
residents have family members who
stop by regularly to take them out for
the evening.
There are activities almost daily,
worship services, card games, Happy
Hours, coffee clubs, movie nights,
exercise classes, book clubs and more.
“They really keep busy,” Soroka says.
Individual temperature settings,
patios and balconies for many
apartments, no long-term leases, a
chef-prepared meal seven days a week,
and permitting small pets—all are
elements that make The Commons
such an attractive option. Plus, “it’s
unusual for a smaller complex to still
offer studios, one- or two-bedroom apartments,” Soroka adds.
Residents must be 55 or older, and they include a mixture of
individuals and couples. “While we are usually at full occupancy,
our waiting list can move quickly and allows potential residents
time to prepare for downsizing and moving,” says Soroka. “Yet we
almost always have something available.”
All of these features and amenities make The
Commons a perfect choice for you or your loved
ones to call home.
