CARDINAL WUERL NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCES INITIATIVE TO HONOR ROONEYS
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School is proud to announce an initiative honoring Ambassador Dan Rooney( Class of 1950) and Patricia Rooney in recognition of their hard work and generosity. The upgraded athletic practice area will be named the Ambassador Dan Rooney Athletic Complex and the school library will be named the Patricia Rooney Library.
Phase One of the initiative will enhance library services by expanding technology, and will also enable the student government to participate in leadership development programs. It will also upgrade the athletic practice fields, including regrading, adding irrigation, drainage and new sod, which will provide improved surfaces for sports teams and the marching band.
“ Mr. and Mrs. Rooney have touched and influenced so many lives in the areas of education, civic leadership and athletics that it is only appropriate we try to honor them with these recognitions,” says Kevin Colbert( Board Member and Class of 1975). Construction began on Nov. 1 with a dedication soon thereafter.

24TH ANNUAL RACE FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
Hampton Alliance for Educational Excellence( HAEE), a 501( c)( 3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and enhance the educational experience of Hampton Township School District( HTSD) students, hosted its 24th Annual Race for Educational Excellence at Hartwood Acres on Saturday, Oct. 15. The event drew in over 700 Hampton-area runners and several hundred spectators.
It raised funds to support educational programs that go beyond the basic curriculum and further enrich the educational experience of Hampton students.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES TWO NEW STORES ADDED TO WIC PROGRAM
The Allegheny County Health Department( ACHD) recently announced that two new markets have been approved as authorized stores of the Women, Infants and Children( WIC) Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program and have begun accepting WIC checks.
The markets are 5 Generations Bakers Fresh Food Market, at the former Bottom Dollar store location at 1100 Chartiers Avenue in McKees Rocks, and SHOP’ n SAVE at 5375 William Flynn Highway in Gibsonia. The SHOP’ n SAVE was granted the new WIC authorization due to a change in ownership. It is the only WIC-authorized store in Gibsonia.
There are more than 100 WIC-authorized grocery stores in Allegheny County. Locations and directions to the stores can be found on the health department’ s website at achd. net / wic. WIC is a federally funded program for pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers and children under the age of five. Eligibility is based on income and nutritional risk.
The 2016-17 income limits for eligibility start with an annual gross income of $ 21,978
for a family of one; $ 29,637 for two; $ 37,296 for three; $ 44,955 for four; and $ 52,614 for five. Unborn children are counted when the woman is pregnant. Allegheny County residents with family sizes larger than five should contact the health department directly for benefit information.
WIC families receive nutrition information, breastfeeding support and food vouchers redeemable at participating grocery stores for infant formula; infant cereal; milk; eggs; cheese; juice; cereal; peanut butter; whole grains, including bread, tortillas, oatmeal and rice; soy beverage; tofu; jarred baby foods; dry or canned beans; canned tuna / sardines / pink salmon; and fresh / frozen / canned fruits and vegetables. Certain whole wheat pastas and yogurts have also been added to the WIC food list.
