Allegheny General Hospital Is at the
Forefront of Innovation and Technology
The Long Ride to Recovery
Michael Ban liked to ride his bike to and from work. That
stopped one day when he started speaking gibberish, and
his friends rushed him to the hospital.
“They ruled out stroke pretty quickly,” Michael said. His
biopsy confirmed Stage 3 anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare
malignant brain tumor.
Using robotic-assisted technology, his surgeon opened his
skull and removed 95 percent of the tumor. And, Michael was
awake during surgery.
Michael was upbeat and confident.
“I put my faith in my doctors because they knew what had
to be done,” Michael said. “I’m ready to get back to work.”

A Clearer View of The Brain
Modus V TM robotic operating microscope
For brain cancer, surgeons at AHN are using the Modus V robotic
operating microscope to magnify and illuminate the tumor. This
allows them to see the tumor from all angles, enabling them to
remove more of the tumor without harming healthy tissue.
