Caskets A Consumer Guide

How do you choose something to buy when it has no relationship to anything you have ever purchased before ? Often , you have to decide quickly and have to do this under emotional distress . This is what purchasing a casket is like . Let ’ s walk through some things to consider during this crucial time . There are several different types of caskets available , each with their own unique features and benefits . Each type of casket has a multitude of selections . There are hundreds of different casket options . Understanding the differences between these casket types can help families make an informed decision and choose the best option for them .

First , casket or coffin ? Both terms are often used interchangeably . Is there a difference ? Yes , there is . A casket is a four-sided container with a lid . A coffin is a six-sided container that is narrow at the head then flares out at the shoulders and narrows again to the feet . Coffins are rarely used in the United States .
Caskets for burial or mausoleum interment are usually made from many different materials such as steel , stainless steel , copper , bronze and natural wood . They come in a wide variety of colors , exterior and interior styles and personal touches . There is a wide range of prices .
Another option is cremation caskets . These caskets are specifically designed for visitation and eventual cremation . They are typically made of wood , wood laminate or wood veneer . We use these when we are transporting someone to a church or other outside facility for services . These caskets are designed to be sturdy , durable and combustible . The deceased is in this casket throughout the funeral and cremation process . Our funeral home offers a ceremonial ( rental ) casket . This casket is used for visitation and services that take place at Perman Funeral Home . The remains are in a cremation container that is inside of the rental unit . The container and interior materials are removed from the exterior shell along with the deceased for the cremation disposition . The outer shell is reused with a new interior and cremation container . It is a cost-effective way to choose a visitation without having to purchase a casket .
Another type of casket is the eco-friendly ( Green or Natural ) casket . These caskets are made of biodegradable materials , such as wicker , bamboo , or cardboard . They are designed to have minimal impact on the environment , and are often a good choice for those who are concerned about their carbon footprint .
Finally , there is the alternative container . These containers are not caskets in the traditional sense . They can be made of a variety of materials such as cardboard , plywood or cloth covered particle board . They are designed to hold the remains of the deceased , and can be used for cremation or burial .
All caskets are designed to get a deceased human being to their final destination . Each casket has its own unique features and benefits . Understanding these materials , colors , features , benefits and prices helps families make an informed decision . It is important to consider personal preferences , budget , and environmental concerns of the deceased as well as their family when making this decision .
