Students Read to Succeed Through
GSMS Program
Read to Succeed students participate in a chemistry lesson led by a local college student.
T
he Greensburg Salem Middle School is continuing
its after-school reading program, Read to Succeed,
this school year. GSMS partners with education
majors from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg
and Seton Hill University. Two middle school English
Language Arts teachers, Miss Zeglin and Mrs. Garofola,
supervise the program, which takes place on Tuesdays
and Thursdays. Students are encouraged to get a free
dinner from the cafeteria before tutoring begins, and
then the college tutors work with the middle schoolers
on important reading strategies. The goal is for the
students to build stronger independent reading skills.
There is busing available for the attendees who need
transportation home. This program follows the colleges’
schedules and takes place in the fall and the spring. For
more information, please contact Barb Garofola at GSMS.
Downtown Greensburg Project
Supports GS Students
A
Generous community donations

GS students!
huge thank you goes out to the Downtown Greensburg Project for
sponsoring an event that generated thousands of school supplies
for Greensburg Salem students! During the organization’s monthly
Sundays on Pittsburgh Street event in August, the group collected school
supplies to be donated specifically to GS schools. Backpacks, pencil boxes,
binders, notebooks, erasers, and more spilled out of the donation boxes and
into the hands of the students who needed them most.
“Last year we had a school supply collection box at Hugo’s and if someone
brought in supplies they would get a discount,” said Jessica Hickey, director
of the Downtown Greensburg Project. “This time we wanted to collect more
and have a bigger event to make that happen.”
Thanks to the efforts of Jessica, her organization, and the local community,
our GS students had all the supplies they needed to start the year off right!
