Although the Fryes have a herd of steers,
they each choose just one to present in
competitions. When asked how he knows
which steer to pick, 6th grader Brady
stated, “You observe it, how it walks, and
its body shape.”
An 8th grade student at the middle
school, Bailey said, “My favorite part is
spending time with my animals in the
ring.” Now that the county fair is over,
Bailey said she and her brothers are
getting new steers and pigs ready for the
next fair and jackpots.
Greensburg Salem High School sisters,
Alli and Aspen Jobe, started showing
pygmy goats as Cloverbuds, and now
present their steers, pigs, and lambs at
competitions. The girls explained that
sometimes their animals are bought by
people who put the animals in their own
herds and breeding programs. “My pig
this year was bought by a family in Fayette
County, and she will be bred to produce
pigs for next year’s fair,” reported Alli, a
junior at GSHS. Aspen explained that they
can continue to participate in 4-H

Alli and Aspen’s parents, Lance and
Colleen, couldn’t be more proud of their
girls. “We got them involved when they
were young to give them something
productive to do and to help develop their
work ethic,”” said Lance, a Greensburg
Salem alum who also participated in 4-H
when he was a student. Mom Colleen
stated, “My kids grew up loving animals,
and the program has taught them a lot
of responsibility and introduced them
to so many new friends. Because of
her involvement, Alli hopes to go into
embryology in cattle professionally.”
Programs like 4-H help youth
develop important life skills and
become leaders and innovators.
Greensburg Salem is proud to
support our 4-H students as
they develop personal initiative,
teamwork, and giving back to
the community.
