ABOUT THE WESTMORELAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra began in 1969 when a group of community leaders and musicians assembled an orchestra for several concerts at a local high school. Now, 48 years later, the WSO brings world-class soloists to the concert stage. Under the artistic direction of Daniel Meyer, the WSO presents four classical concerts and one holiday pops, all at the Palace Theatre in downtown Greensburg. The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra announced its fall course offerings through its Academy of Music, located at 951 Old Salem Road in the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center. Course offerings include: WYSO String Ensemble serves elementary string students who study privately and wish to perform in a group setting. It meets Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. through Nov. 28 with Matthew Hettinga at the Academy of Music. Tuition fee is $99. WYSO Philharmonia is a middle level orchestra, comprised of String Ensemble Alumni, middle school students and others hoping to eventually audition for the WYSO Philharmonic. It meets Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Although no audition is required, a recommendation from your private music teacher or school music teacher is necessary. WYSO is open to mostly high school students who play string, wind, brass or percussion instruments, though some advanced middle school students are accepted. The fall semester runs through mid-Nov. The semester’s tuition is $215.
