High School Students Commended for Academic Success
Mary Joy, a Greensburg Salem senior, earned
Semi-Finalist in the 62nd annual National
Merit Scholarship Program. She is one of
approximately 16,000 academically talented
high school seniors who have an opportunity
to continue in the competition for some 7,400
National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32
million that will be offered next spring. From the
16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected
to advance to the Finalist level.
Students Mary Heberling, Rose Markle, and
Adam Petro were named Commended Students
in the National Merit Scholarship Program. A
Letter of Commendation from the school and
the National Merit Scholarship Corporation
(NSMC) will be presented to the students by
Principal David Zilli. Commended Students
place in the top five percent of the 1.6 million
students who entered the 2017 competition by
taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test. “The young men and

accomplishments, as well as the key role their
schools play in the academic development, is
it vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational
opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
High School Principal David Zilli stated, “It is definitely an honor for these students, but also for our staff to have four students honored
through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Each of the students has excelled academically.” Congratulations to Mary, Rose, Adam,
and Mary for their outstanding academic achievements. GS Proud!
