A special recognition of music education took place at the homecoming
game for Greensburg Salem High School on September 23rd. The Golden
Lions Marching Band celebrated the return of former Greensburg Salem
High School band directors Ken Hill, Dr. Mel Orange, Kim Palmiscno,
Tim Hammill and Steve Tribble. Former directors Graham Grubb and
Joe Buncie, who are both deceased, were represented by members of
their families. The directors and families were honored on field prior to
the football game with a presentation from Superintendent Dr. Eileen
Amato. Current band director Jaime West deemed the event “a great
evening honoring our former marching band directors’ contributions to
the Greensburg community and to music education, which is such an
important part of our students’ academic experience.”

Back to School Bash Prepares GS
Students for a Great Start
The Greensburg Salvation Army hosted a “Back to School Bash” for local
students prior to school starting this year. The free event, held at St. Clair Park,
provided over 200 backpacks for qualifying Greensburg area students, the
majority of whom attend GS schools. Students and families received many
of the necessities required for a positive back to school experience. Vision
screenings were given by America’s Best Vision, Empire Beauty provided
haircuts, and Smiles mobile dentist performed dental checks and cleanings,
all free of charge. Other local organizations and businesses in attendance
provided school supplies, treats such as pizza, donuts, and ice tea, and
information to prepare families for the start of the school year. The district’s
Coordinator of Elementary Education, Kelly Gustafson, stacked her table
with free books for all ages. According to Mrs. Gustafson, “Greensburg Salem
School District believes that “books build connections between the school and
families. The reading table sets the scene for literacy and promotes fun ways to
enjoy reading at home and with classmates.”
Due to the overwhelming response through registration, the organization
had to limit the number of families in attendance. For next year’s “Bash,” the
Salvation Army would like to accumulate 400 backpacks to distribute to
all students in need of a new bag. For more information on Salvation Army
programs and events like the Back to School Bash, or to volunteer your time or
services, please contact MaryKay or Chris Mackneer at 724.834.3335.
