Q What takes place for a patient during an initial evaluation for removal of wisdom teeth? During a consultation for the evaluation of wisdom teeth, the patient’s past medical history and current symptoms are thoroughly reviewed. Next, a physical and radiographic examination is performed to evaluate the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. Then, the different types of anesthesia options (local, nitrous oxide, or IV sedation) are discussed that best suits the patient’s needs. Lastly, the risks and benefits are explained in great detail to the patient. Q What can be done to ease a patient’s anxiety regarding a surgical procedure? Anesthesia is a very important aspect of oral and maxillofacial surgical training. Proper anesthesia allows for stress and pain management for the patient during and after the procedure. I was trained extensively and administer daily in-office intravenous sedation. A discussion regarding your options to maximize comfort and thorough health history will be reviewed with you during your initial consultation. Q What are you most proud of regarding your practice?
