Preparing for the Future…Today!
Shaye Potter (7th from left) and TFIM group
I
n partnership with The Consortium for Public Education,
Greensburg Salem High School students participated in The
Future is Mine (TFIM), a leadership development and career
exploration program designed to provide them with the
skills necessary for success in the workplace. Led by teachers
Lucy Iapalucci, Wendy Jorgensen, and Alaine Nativio, nearly
30 students participated this year, taking away skills and
knowledge to last a lifetime.
Sophomore Shaye Potter, who has participated both years
of the program, shared her experiences with TFIM:
The Future Is Mine is a future-ready club that just started at our
school last year. During my freshman year, I was asked by Mrs.
Iapalucci and Mrs. Jorgensen to be in a club called “The Future
Is Mine”. They are both of my advisors in the club. I decided that
I would join, along with a few other classmates. Little did we
know, our small group of 17 members would go on to do great
things!
The Future Is Mine is preparing us to be career ready. All of the
members are taught about table manners, writing thank you
notes, resumes and cover letters, how to tie a tie, how to dress
at an interview or formal event, how to talk at an interview, and
more. Some other fun things we have done so far in TFIM
are read to the children at Nicely Elementary on multiple
occasions and brought them treats, held a formal business
brunch in our cafeteria with administrators and leaders from
the community, and attended a conference in Pittsburgh. At
the conference, we presented our club and what we are all
about to other TFIM groups from almost 30 other schools.
Because we are mostly 9th and 10th grade students, we were
the youngest presenters there! We also visited career sites,
and everyone had a great time exploring different professions.
This year, we decided to expand our club and invited
some of the freshman to join us. So far, we have taught the
current freshman about everything we have learned, and
they have also attended all of the events we have done so far.
Personally, I am so happy and very proud to be a part of this
organization. I have learned many career ready skills in this
club that I will be taking with me for the rest of my life. I am
now better at public speaking and more informed about life
after high school. The Future Is Mine has given me so many
awesome opportunities, such as meeting business leaders and
making connections within our school. Our future just keeps
getting brighter!
