Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center Develops Student Leadership Through Skills Training
Greensburg Salem High School and Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center ( CWCTC ) students Bowen Holleran , D ’ Angelo Cain and Chris Condron demonstrated their trade expertise at the district-level of the SkillsUSA Competition in late December 2017 .
SkillsUSA is a national organization that has created a partnership of students , teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce . Competitive events are held at the district , state , national and world levels to showcase the best career and technical education students in the nation .
Bowen Holleran participated with three other students in the “ Team Works ” competition at the district level , using his masonry skills to assist in the building of a two-room construction project to demonstrate the students ’ ability to work as a team . Their
Bowen Holleran ’ s masonry skills earned him a spot at the state SkillsUSA competition . task required the use of carpentry , masonry , electrical and plumbing skills as the team analyzed a detailed blue print to construct the project . The team was judged on jobsite safety and cleanliness , meeting specified building codes , organization and correct ordering of materials , proper use of tools and equipment , as well as presentation of an action plan . Bowen and his teammates- Camron Levendosky ( Hempfield ), Noah Mull ( Hempfield ) and John Gravely ( Yough ) - received a first place award and a spot at the state competition in Hershey , PA .
Junior D ’ Angelo Cain , who is studying Robotics Engineering at CWCTC , also won first place in the “ Related Technical Math ” competition . D ’ Angelo took a written test to demonstrate the skills needed to solve math problems encountered in the skilled trades and technical and professional occupations . The test was comprised of problems applicable to any career and technical field and provided D ’ Angelo with the opportunity to demonstrate

his problem-solving skills , not just his mathematical ability .
“ I had two hours to a complete a packet of math problems that would be used in the real world ,” explained D ’ Angelo . “ For example , I had to figure out what size pipe would be needed for a fluid to go through it at a certain rate or other situations that might occur in different technical fields .” When he graduates next year , he is considering going to college to study robotics or engineering and feels he has developed a good foundation for his future plans from participating in the CWCTC ’ s program .
This school year was tenth-grade student Chris Condron ’ s first year at CWCTC , but he was excited to participate in SkillsUSA in the “ Web Design ” challenge . Chris , a Computer and Informational Science student , has learned how to create websites using HTML , JavaScript and CSS programming , and utilized these

Chris , an aspiring computer programmer , is looking forward to participating in future competitions to display his skills .
Another Greensburg Salem student making headlines for his outstanding work in the automotive technology field is senior Bryan Sager . Bryan and fellow student , Mason East ( Mount Pleasant ), participated in the Western PA Automotive Competition at the Community College of Allegheny County ( CCAC ) West Hills campus earlier this year , diagnosing and repairing a Dodge Challenger . He and Mason each won an $ 11,000.00 prize
and the chance to compete against 27 other teams in the

During the four-hour competition on day one , Bryan and Mason completed various automotive tasks at ten different stations with varying levels of difficulty . On the second day , the students received 15 “ on the car ” challenges in which they had to diagnose and repair all of the problems within three hours .
Bryan attributes much of his success to being a part of the CWCTC program for the past three years . “ The CTC has benefitted me a lot and the instructors are all very supportive . My teachers at Greensburg Salem and the CTC got me to go to New York ,
