Reading is my Super Power! Nicely Elementary marked Read Across America Day with a SUPER celebration. And there was a lot to celebrate! With a school goal of reading 1,000 hours in just fourteen days, the student population surpassed their goal on day thirteen and ended up logging 1353 hours of reading. The individual student goals grew at each grade level with kindergarten and first grade students being asked to read a total of 100 minutes and the fourth and fifth graders at 300 minutes over the two week period. As students met goals, their achievements were noted on the “superhero badge” wall. The event was a huge success because of the efforts of the teachers who worked to create innovative reading activities which inspired children to become “Super Readers.” Students rotated through the super hero-themed activities throughout the day. The top readers were then recognized during an assembly where they had the thrill of throwing whip-cream pies at the teacher of their choice. The teachers and staff at Nicely built an atmosphere of excitement centered around a love for reading which was evident in the voices of the children as they pledged to make reading a part of their everyday life. These super readers struck a pose in front of the superhero badge wall. GRE E NS BU RG SAL E M SC H O
