Greensburg native Sydney Green leaves a trail of impressive accolades as a recent graduate of St . Vincent College in Latrobe .
Greensburg native Sydney Green recently graduated from St . Vincent College in Latrobe . She leaves a trail of impressive wins in women ’ s track and field , along with academic accomplishments that reveal a well-rounded athlete who succeeds both on and off the track . Green won the Presidents ’ Athletic Conference ( PAC ) Indoor title in the one mile , setting a school record . She won gold in the 800 meter at the PAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships , and has the third fastest time in the 200- and 400-meter dash in St . Vincent ’ s women ’ s track team history .
Proving she has more than just skills on the track , Green was also selected for the 2022 St . Vincent College President ’ s Award , which is given for outstanding academic achievement , student leadership and community service , which included volunteering at the Westmoreland County Food Bank . Another recent honor came when she was named a 2022 College Sports Information Directors of America ( CoSIDA ) All-American . This prestigious program was founded in 1988 , and past honorees have included Bill Bradley , Pat Haden and Merlin Olsen . Student athletes are nominated by their school ’ s athletic department , and must have a gradepoint average of 3.6 or higher and be a significant contributor to their athletic team .
Green capped off her college academic career by graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor ’ s degree in engineering . She is currently working for Westinghouse as a mechanical engineer .
Her love of track began when she was 12 , and through the years she has run in a variety of events from the 200 meter to the 800 meter , which is her favorite and best event .
Though she ’ s known for finishing first , it may be her attitude of “ slow and steady ” that has won the race .
“ Be patient and trust the training and your coaches . Follow the training plan to a ‘ T ,’” Green advises , while taking the time to rest in order to avoid injuries . Besides running , she also cross-trains and lifts weights to give her strength and endurance . The discipline she ’ s learned in competitive running is a lesson that she applies to every area of her life . As team captain her senior year , Green was also an inspirational leader .
“ Track doesn ’ t seem like it ’ s a team sport , but it really is ,” she explains . “ It ’ s all about pushing and cheering for your teammates . It ’ s all about encouraging each other .”
Though no longer on a track team , Green continues to push herself competitively with new challenges . She ’ s signed up for her first marathon in September in Erie . So far , she ’ s completed a run of 15 miles and feels she ’ ll be ready for the race and will finish , hopefully maintaining a pace of 7:45 per mile .
The same positive attitude that has made her a successful college athlete and graduate will no doubt serve her well in her first marathon . We wish her luck ! n
