LOCAL SCHOOLS HONORED FOR INCLUSIVE SPORTS PROGRAMS
Mt. Pleasant and Hempfield Area high schools were recently nationally recognized by Special Olympics as Unified Champion Schools, celebrating their commitment to inclusive programming for students of all abilities. They’ re two of only 11 schools in Pennsylvania— and among more than 200 nationwide— to receive the honor this year.
Through the Unified Champion Schools program, students in special and general education team up for sports like bocce and track and field, while also collaborating on school-wide events and leadership activities.
Hempfield’ s program has grown rapidly since 2015, with plans to add Unified Flag Football this fall. Franklin Regional and Norwin high schools were also recertified, maintaining recognition first awarded in 2020.

Looking for a meaningful— and free— activity to do with your kids for the rest of the summer? Sign up to do a food rescue through 412 Food Rescue, an award-winning nonprofit that connects places with surplus food to volunteers who can deliver it to local nonprofits that feed people in need.
Using an easy-to-navigate app, families can choose quick one-hour rescues that work with their schedules. It’ s a hands-on way for kids— from toddlers to teens— to learn about food waste, hunger and community impact. Bonus: older kids can earn volunteer hours or build experience for school, jobs or driving requirements.

POINT PARK UNIVERSITY AWARDED $ 450K GRANT
Point Park University’ s School of Education has received a $ 450,000 PAsmart Advancing Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to support career and technical education( CTE) across the state.
The grant— one of fewer than 20 Innovation Grants awarded from nearly 200 applicants— will fund efforts to expand access to high-quality STEM education by strengthening the preparation and certification of CTE educators.
Led by Dr. Linda Hippert, the project focuses on faculty development, outreach, in-practice learning, and collaboration with regional CTE directors. The initiative aims to ensure that Pennsylvania’ s teaching workforce is ready to train students for growing careers in fields like engineering, computer science, AI, and health care.
“ This grant affirms our commitment to building a strong, innovative teaching workforce in Pennsylvania,” said Point Park University President Dr. Chris W. Brussalis.“ It’ s about giving students the skills they need to succeed in today’ s evolving job market.”

STEP INTO THE ICE AGE AT THE PITTSBURGH ZOO & AQUARIUM!
This summer, the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is transporting guests back in time with its newest temporary exhibit,“ Ice Age: Frozen in Time,” on display through Sept. 1.
The immersive experience brings the frozen world of the Pleistocene epoch to life with more than 50 life-like animated creatures, including mammoths, sabertooth cats, woolly rhinos and dodo birds. Realistic sights, sounds and movements help recreate what life was like millions of years ago— right down to snorts, grunts and mammoth-size rumbles.
