Classic! Carnegie Hall … the Kennedy Centre … the David Letterman Show … the Rotary Club of Wanaka Emergency Response Kits fundraiser. The Trapeze Quintet, a group of leading New Zealand classical musicians who’ve played some of the world’s most illustrious venues, paid a special visit to Wanaka recently to perform an evening of chamber music before 120 Rotarians and guests. Rotary Club of Wanaka Public Image director and president-elect Fran Tate described the evening, held in the Pavilion at Edgewater Resort, as ‘just stunning’. Brought to town by Wanaka Rotarians, with support from sponsors Harraways and Harcourts, the musicians – all professionals who play for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra – enchanted the audience with a programme including works by Benny Goodman, and Provofiev’s ‘Quintet in G minor’, from the Trapeze Ballet. In total, Fran says, $3600 was raised, and will provide for six Emergency Response Kits (ERKs), which are used in the aftermath of disasters in the South Pacific region. And the cup runneth over Our District 9980 contingent allowed ourselves a little air punch moment at September’s Rotary Institute held in Sydney – we were awarded the coveted Rotary Foundation New Zealand Annual Giving Cup. District 9980, which has a particularly strong and proud tradition of giving, comfortably took out the cup in 200708 and 2008-09 – but stiff competition from our friends at District 9910 saw us bow out until the 2015-16 year. The cup is awarded to the New Zealand district that gives the most to the Rotary Foundation, crucial contributions that enable Rotary to carry out humanitarian work around the world. Each district governor, in consultation with clubs, sets the target every year, which is monitored by Rotary Foundation staff, who publish ongoing rankings. And the winning numbers: District 9980’s per capita contribution was nearly $150 per member, which worked out almost $13 higher than our closest competition – District 9910 – and was around 70 percent ahead of the district which gave the least.
