Winton!
Huge congratulations to the Rotary Club of
Winton from all of us in District 9980 for
the accolades your amazing community
work received at the recent Environment
Southland Community Awards.

Winton’s Rotarians were named joint winners in the Achiever
section at a gala awards ceremony for their tireless efforts
constructing and enhancing the Winton Rotary Trail.
Members describe the project, which has seen extensive plantings
of native trees and shrubs along the 9km track, as one their most
rewarding yet.
President Peter King says the project has been very much a
community effort, with many chipping in with plants, funding and
“in kind” donations.
“Not to mention the good will of several landowners who have
agreed to the trail traversing their land,” he says.

The judges made particular mention of the community approach
involved in the project, along with the fact that Rotary’s work on
the trail will go on to benefit future generations as the plantings
mature.
Formal easements are now in place to protect the trail, and the
Winton Community Board has taken responsibility for maintaining
it as a community asset.
“But Rotary has a vested interest in continuing to enhance the
trail,” Peter says.
“Apart from more planting, other options for the future include
outdoor art work and a barbecue in the Ivy Russell Reserve.”
