INDUSTRY INSIGHT DENTAL CARE SPONSORED CONTENT Ask the Dentist The 411 on Dental Implants in 412 H ave you been told you have a tooth that is not repairable? Maybe you lost a tooth in an accident or are just tired of your ill-fitting denture or bridge. If so, you are likely a candidate for dental implants. A dental implant is the preferred method for tooth replacement. It functions, chews and feels just like a natural tooth! Unlike partials and dentures that just replace the top portion of the problematic tooth above the gum, a dental implant replaces the root system as well as the top part of the tooth, allowing it to be the long-lasting, effective solution you are seeking. The procedure of placement at Fox Chapel Advanced Dental Care is surprisingly simple and most patients report that the discomfort and healing process are minimal and well worth it. The steps below describe what you can expect if you are considering a dental implant. 1. First, imaging is performed. We use state-of-the-art technology available at only a handful of Pittsburgh dental offices, giving a 3D virtual image. This allows selection of the best and most precise location for the implant. 2. Once the location has been selected, the condition is assessed and we determine if there is a requirement of any bone addition. About 30% of patients require this. 3. With the help of technology and the minimally invasive technique used at our office, the implant post is then placed (usually requiring no sutures). Think of the difference between laparoscopic vs. regular surgery. In many cases, a tooth can be placed on top of the implant at the time of surgery. In other instances, there is a healing period that is required. I then design a tooth specifically for the patient in our onsite lab, once the implant is fully healed. People often ask what the cost will be. While we cannot determine that until certain conditions have been assessed on each patient, we can assure you that due to the extensive and well-documented studies that have been conducted, many dental insurance carriers are now covering the cost of the implant procedure. At my office, we file all insurance through dental and medical insurance to ensure the best possible coverage for our patients. You may be surprised to learn that some dental procedures are being covered by your medical insurance! With the long-term benefits and the ability to comfortably and confidently smile and chew again, why not ask?
