Postures are on the floor, either seated or supine, and held for two to five minutes. No prior yoga experience is necessary and all bodies are welcome! Wildflower Walk Thursday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. Join the library and Allegheny County Parks at Hartwood Acres for an evening wildflower walk! Look for and identify spring/summer wildflowers and learn where to find different species. Wear good walking shoes and be prepared to hike about two miles over mildly rough terrain. Life on Mars Wednesday, June 21, at 6 p.m. Join astronomer Diane Turnshek for this family-friendly presentation on all things MARS! Diane teaches astronomy at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Her love of both astronomy and science fiction led her to crew the Mars Desert Research Station near Bryce Canyon, Utah. Summer in France Wine Tasting Friday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy light appetizers while sampling a variety of wines from different French regions. The tasting will be led by former local resident Jill Kummer of the prestigious Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs, the oldest food and wine society in the world. $30 per person. Rock Painting Wednesday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m. Transform rocks into works of art! Paint them with colorful patterns, or any way you imagine! For ages 6 and up. Building Challenge Thursday, June 29, at 2 p.m. Test your engineering skills by completing building challenges. Using Legos, Magnatiles, Lincoln Logs, and recyclable materials, you will be challenged to create different objects. Rock Stars in Smocks! Monarchs and Other Butterflies Wednesday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m. From crawling caterpillar to fluttering adult, let’s learn about butterflies. We will go outside to look for them, too, weather permitting. Gabi Hughes from Beechwood Farms will present this program designed for kindergarten through adult. Rock Mining Rush Friday, July 27, at 11 a.m. The library and Carnegie Museum of Natural History present “Rock Mining Crush.” Explore mineral resources and how we use them in four fun-filled activity stations. Pan for minerals in a portable sluice box and be surprised by what minerals are needed to make a cell phone. Ages 6 and up. Teddy Bear Picnic Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. Join us in the lovely Welcome Garden for the annual Teddy Bear Picnic. Bring a bag lunch and your favorite Teddy. There will be cookies and drinks. Ages 2 and up. Terrarium Workshop Saturday, Aug. 4, at 12:30 p.m. Join Allegheny County Parks to design and build a terrarium with native plant species. The program will consist of planning, discussion about plant care and requirements, and creating your own terrarium. You’ll leave with a beautiful terrarium to enjoy for years.
