FOX CHAPEL STUDENTS HONORED AS 2017 CARSON SCHOLARS
Vivian Shao , an eighth grader at Dorseyville Middle School , is among 37 Pittsburgh and 483 nationwide students to be honored as 2017 Carson Scholars .
Shao is highly involved , both academically and with extracurricular activities . She was part of the winning team of the Fox Chapel Area School District ’ s Battle of Books in 2013 , and is a student dancer with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre , having performed in “ The Nutcracker ” in 2014 . Shao has also worked hard to raise money for the Animal Rescue League . In addition to community work , she is a straight-A student in school and a member of the FIRST League Girls of Steel team , a competitive robotic engineering team sponsored by CMU . She is also an “ A ” swimmer for the Fox Chapel Killer Whales swim club .
Gwendolyn Davison , a Fox Chapel Area High School freshman and a 2016 Carson Scholar , has also been recognized again this year .
About the Carson Scholars Fund Every year , the Carson Scholars Fund receives applications from bright , talented and dedicated students throughout the nation . Applicants are nominated by their schools based on their high academic achievement and commitment to their communities . Each year , the organization is continually impressed by the quality of applications received . The 2017 class of Carson Scholars ’ compassion for others , dedication to making a difference and vision for the future is inspiring . Exhibiting self‐reflection and perseverance , these scholars represent our future leaders .
The Carson Scholars Fund announced that 483 of the best and brightest academic superstars from across the country have been named 2017 Carson Scholars . With this honor , these students receive a $ 1,000 college scholarship and recognition package .
Also this year , 872 previous scholarship winners have achieved recognition status . These previous scholars have continued to meet the high standards of the Carson Scholars Fund . They show , year after year , their leadership both in the classroom and in the community .
