WHAT’S NEWS IN FOX CHAPEL AREA Location: Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church (corner of Fox Chapel and Field Club roads) Speaker: Tim Dawson, Co-founder, The Art of Democracy Partners at The Art of Democracy plan and facilitate high-stakes conversations on controversial issues for communities, local governments, nonprofits, and corporations, with the aim of bringing stakeholders and policymakers together to find a path forward. Dawson will discuss some of the techniques he and his team use to defuse heated rhetoric and achieve successful outcomes in community forum sessions. This event is free and open to the public. SPECIAL FARMERS MARKET/HARVEST FESTIVAL AT THE BLOCK NORTHWAY The Block Northway will host a year- end autumn farmers market to showcase the bounty of fall produce, along with a Harvest Festival featuring free fun activities for the entire family! The fun begins on Friday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the new two-level South Atrium located near DSW and Wahlburgers. Guests will enjoy locally grown farm- fresh goods sold by diverse vendors like Freedom Farms, The Olive Tap, Wigle Whiskey, Jarred, GOODLife Juices, Aunt Carol’s Homemade Dips, Gahr’s Hamloaf, Zeke’s Coffee, Kettle Corn and many more. Activities include free face painting, balloon artist, Carnegie Science Center Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream, Pumpkin Patch, glow sticks, appearance by Witch Hazel, and Harvest Brew Tasting by Pittsburgh Brewing. Costumes are encouraged and giveaways are on a first-come, first-served basis. JUNIOR MENDELSSOHN CHOIR OF PITTSBURGH PRESENTS ‘DREAMS AND DANCES’ On Sunday, Nov. 18, the Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh will present its fall concert—Dreams and Dances—at Third Presbyterian Church. The nearly 50 young singers of the choir will be joined by guest musicians the Kassia Ensemble as they present a program of dreamlike choral music featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s “Beatus Vir,” RV 598, Gwyneth Walker’s “Dreams and Dances,” and music by Abbie Betinis, Thomas Morley, Rosephayne Powell and Sarah Quartel. The Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh ( JMCP) is the only program of its kind in the region and one of the country’s few vocal training programs for youth managed by a symphonic choir. Founded in 1986 to serve singers too old to perform with children’s choirs and too young to perform with adult choruses, JMCP enables talented students in grades 9 through 12 to train with accomplished professional singers and music educators.
