GREAT BIRTHDAY BAKE
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh- Cranberry hosted the Great Birthday Bake on Nov. 5. The one-of-a-kind event was designed to celebrate the hotel’ s first“ birthday” after an extensive renovation and transformation project in 2016. The Great Birthday Bake: A Kids Cookie Competition was an event collaboration with local nonprofit Beverly’ s Birthdays. Child bakers under 18 years old entered their best cookie recipe into the competition and presented their creations and showcased their talent at the event.
More than 36 local youth bakers competed and over 350 people attended and tasted cookies. The following winners were announced: Fruity & Fun: Emma Kovarik, Chocoholic: Sarah Widenhofer, Birthday Nut: Allie Bruder, Fancy Schmancy: Paige Baker and Overall Best Cookie: Kate Boyle.
Cookies were judged on appearance, creativity and flavor. Winners in each category won a custom apron and $ 50 Visa gift card. The Overall Best Cookie winner received a one-on-one baking session with celebrity guest judge and owner of Yummyholic, Jasmine Cho, along with a portrait cookie created by her. DoubleTree Cranberry also presented the overall winner with a staycation at the hotel for a family of four and a gift card from Ember & Vine Woodfired Oven and Social Bar, as well as 75,000 Hilton Honors points. The winner’ s cookie has been available to order on Ember & Vine’ s menu during the month of December.
Judges included Jasmine Cho, Yummyholic; Chris Fennimore, WQED; Yu-Ling Behr, KidsBurgh; Alex Portis, Food Network’ s Kids Baking Championship; and Hal B. Klein, Pittsburgh Magazine.
PLATINUM WINNER
Cranberry Township Noon Rotarian Bill Hewko was presented with the 2016-17 Platinum Club of the Year Award by Judith Hughes, district governor of Rotary 7280. Hewko served as the Cranberry Rotary Noon Club president for 2016-17 and accepted the award during the Rotary One Summit held in Franklin, Pa., on Nov. 4. Rotary District 7280 is made up of 40 clubs— and approximately 1,000 members— in western Pennsylvania. Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community’ s business and professional men and women. The world’ s Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious and open to all cultures, races and creeds.
The main objective of Rotary is service— in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today’ s most critical issues, including children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers and other professionals along with vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.
CEKELLA FAMILY OF CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP WINS AWARD IN THE FRESH AIR FUND’ S ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST
Cranberry Township residents, the Cekella family, participated in The Fresh Air Fund’ s Friendly Towns Program this past summer and were among the winners of the 2017 Photo Contest! Winners were selected from the hundreds of photos submitted by volunteer host families along the East Coast and southern Canada. The photos capture the memorable experiences volunteer host families shared with Fresh Air children this past summer. Categories included“ Backyard Fun,”“ Friendship,”“ New Experiences,”“ Exploring Nature,”“ Swimming,”“ The Beach” and“ Ice Cream.”
The Cekellas’ photo was selected as the winner in the“ Summer Siblings and New Experiences” categories, and features Fresh Air child Isaiah, 9, at the Pirates game with the Cekella family.
The Fresh Air Fund— an independent, not-for-profit agency— has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.
