Time to move? Here are some tips for packing.
1. Pack for the first night. Use a suitcase or clear bin, something easy to identify so it doesn’ t get lost with the other moving items. In addition to packing your next day’ s outfit and toiletries, be sure to pack any medications and a set of sheets for the first night. As soon as the beds are set up in your new home, make the bed so it’ s ready for when the day’ s exhaustion sets in. You know it’ s coming! Be ready! 2. Take a photo of your electronic / media equipment before you unplug. Refer to the photo when it’ s time to reconnect the devices. 3. Be sure to change your mailing address at least a week before you move. Make it easy by going online to www. usps. com. There is an added bonus of moving related coupons if you complete the change online.
4. Make sure you schedule the setup of your new utility services no less than 10 days before your move date. Some utility services like cable and Internet require a visit to your new house for services to be connected. Waiting too long to schedule the appointment could cost you some down time for Internet access. 5. Keep your cleaning supplies close so you can find them easily. One of the first tasks you will want to tackle is cleaning. Make sure your supplies are on hand. Also, don’ t forget to pack extra paper goods like paper towels, toilet paper and tissue. 6. Label each box with a room name and post signs on moving day to identifying each room. 7. Use small boxes for heavy items and big boxes for light items. 8. Keep moving receipts, especially if the move is related to your employment. Check with a tax preparer to see if these expenses are tax deductible. It’ s always a bonus to cut your tax bill!
