SV STUDENT HONORED FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE
Corbin Edge, 13, of Evans City, a student at
Seneca Valley Middle School, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence from The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, and with a President’ s Volunteer Service Award.
Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals( NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors young people across America for outstanding volunteer service. Certificates of Excellence are granted to the top 10 percent of all Prudential Spirit of Community Award applicants in each state and the District of Columbia.
Seneca Valley Middle School Principal Robert Ceh nominated Corbin for national honors this fall in recognition of his volunteer service.
Corbin, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 18-months old. Diabetes affects his daily life in ways that others cannot see, but Corbin is determined to live as normal a life as others his age. His commitment to raising awareness and funds for the American Diabetes Association led to him being honored as the 2017-18 Youth Ambassador for the Western Pennsylvania Diabetes Association. Corbin has donated those funds- $ 17,500 in total to date – to the American Diabetes Association.
“ I want my peers to understand that people in our community are glad to help and support young people like me when we want to make a difference,” says Corbin.“ I have learned that having Type 1 Diabetes is nothing to be ashamed of or to hide, because I can live a normal life and use my personal life to encourage and teach others about the disease of diabetes. This makes me realize how important my efforts are for all diabetics. Remember, no matter how small or large the results are, it is really more about helping others and teaching about life as a diabetic.”
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals( NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.
“ Prudential is honored to celebrate the contributions of these remarkable young volunteers,” says Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld.“ By shining a spotlight on the difference they’ ve made in their communities, we hope others are inspired to volunteer, too.”
“ These students have not only improved their communities through their exemplary volunteer service, but also set a fine example for their peers,” says JoAnn Bartoletti, executive director of NASSP.“ Each of their stories is proof of the impact one young person can have when they decide to make a difference.” eneca Valley
