You may qualify for a low-dose CT lung screening if you meet the following criteria:
• Are between 50 to 80 years old.
• Currently smoke or have quit smoking in the last 15 years.
• Have at least a 20-pack-year history of smoking( one pack per day for 20 years, two packs per day for 10 years).
If a nodule is discovered, the team uses an advanced robotic bronchoscopy system, a tool that helps identify lung nodules deeper in the lung with more accuracy to detect lung cancer early. This can lead to an earlier diagnosis and better chance of survival. Talk with your primary care provider to determine whether a lung screening is right for you.
What to Expect
No special preparation or fasting is needed. The scan uses no dyes or injections, and nothing needs to be swallowed. The CT scan is a quick, painless, noninvasive procedure that takes under one minute, with the whole appointment lasting less than 30 minutes. Once the scan is completed, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled with a member of the Lung Screening team to discuss the results in detail, answer any questions, and determine if any further testing is needed.
Treatment Options
Treatment for cancerous lung nodules may vary depending on how advanced the cancer is. For early-stage lung cancer that is contained within the chest, surgical treatment is typically recommended. For more advanced stages of lung cancer, such as tumors that have spread to the lymph nodes or other organs, patients may need combination or multimodality therapy that includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and surgery.
