Intermediate School Students Shine Through Extracurricular Opportunities

At Chartiers Valley Intermediate School, we believe learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. While academic growth remains a priority, we are equally proud of the many extracurricular opportunities our students pursue each day. Opportunities that help them discover passions, develop leadership, build confidence, and strengthen lifelong skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and responsibility. From the performing arts to athletics and wellness programs, our students continue to represent our school with pride and enthusiasm throughout our community.

Students also play a role in shaping the program’ s identity beyond the track. Race shirts for the Kids Marathon are designed and printed by students in Jeff Ackerman’ s Technology Education classes, adding another layer of student ownership and crosscurricular connection. The collaboration ensures that Kids of Steel is not just a running club, but a district-wide effort that celebrates creativity, teamwork, and pride in accomplishment.
As the program enters its 12th year, the goals remain consistent: to help children learn proper running form, pacing, and healthy habits while having fun and building confidence. Every mile logged brings students closer to completing the Kids Marathon during Pittsburgh Marathon weekend in the spring, a moment that often becomes a lifelong memory for young runners and their families.
At Chartiers Valley Primary School, Kids of Steel is more than an after-school or early-morning activity. It is a tradition rooted in joy, motivation, and heart, one that continues to grow with each new group of students who clip on a lanyard, line up at the starting point, and discover that movement can be both meaningful and fun.

One of the most celebrated aspects of student life at the Intermediate School is our thriving music program. With over 300 members in our band, orchestra, and chorus, students are given the opportunity to learn new skills, develop creativity, and experience the joy of performing.

Students involved in band and orchestra take on the challenge of learning an instrument, practicing consistently, and working collaboratively to produce high-quality performances. These ensembles teach more than music; they foster discipline, focus, and confidence, while giving students the rewarding experience of contributing to something larger than themselves.
Our chorus program offers students another powerful outlet for expression. Through singing, students build musical literacy, listening skills, and performance confidence. The chorus experience helps students learn how to work together toward a shared goal while celebrating the unique talents each student brings to the group.
