listens closely
For Joseph Clark, DO, every patient who comes to his emergency
department is a new patient, so good communication is a vital
fi rst step. “Patients come to us cold, and we have to listen to what
they are really there for,” he said. “They come with expectations,
and we don’t want to fall short.”
“I ask the patient, ‘What do you want to see happen today?’ It
takes some discussion to get to it,” he said.
For Dr. Clark, the key to emergency care is recognizing signs of a
serious problem and doing the right tests to confi rm it.
“Patients come to us when they are most needy and vulnerable.
We fi gure out the problem quickly and get them on the right road
for treatment,” he said.
