The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is a nature escape close to home and yet it feels a world away. There are the vibrant colors of the gardens, and the calm of the forest is interrupted only by the sounds of birds. The quiet of the woods reminds us to be still and see the beauty of nature that exists beyond our phone screens.
One way to enjoy the beautiful surroundings is with Yoga in the Garden by the Lotus Pond. Certified instructors lead sessions to improve flexibility and strength in peaceful surroundings.
Forest bathing is another unique activity for experiencing nature. It’ s not an actual bath, but a sensory immersion in the natural world that’ s all about awareness and focusing on the sights and sounds of the forest at a slow, leisurely pace.
For something more lively, visit the exhibit by Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics, entitled“ Momentum.” This popular exhibit will be open through fall! The garden vibrates with color from this artistic display. It features two kinetic sculptures that transform the Lotus Pond and the Garden of the Five Senses with a dynamic display.
Combining music with natural surroundings is another relaxing way to soak in the beauty of the garden, with Evening Thyme & Tunes every third Thursday on the Festival Lawn. Local musicians entertain, and there’ s a cash bar with spirits and a curated menu from the Canopy Café. The entertainment is included in the price of admission.
For children, Storytime & Crafting in the Garden is an enchanting way to learn. Children hear a story read aloud, followed by a craft that’ s related to the story. This program is included with daily admission, and is designed for kids 3 – 6 years old.
Chair yoga is great for anyone, but especially those with mobility issues. A certified instructor leads sessions to improve flexibility, strength and the mind-body connection. The garden also offers guided electric cart tours for up to five guests. The tour features the history of the garden along with the opportunity to explore different areas.
There’ s a little something for everyone at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. As autumn approaches, the cooler temperatures make a visit to the garden even more inviting and a great way to add color to your life. For a full schedule of events and programming, visit pittsburghbotanicgarden. org. n
