South Hills Dental Arts —
Keeping You Safer in the Age of COVID
Dr. Steven Crandall, an owner and Clinical Advisor of South Hills
Dental Arts, has always put the patient first when it comes to
dental care by being on the front lines of technology and training.
So when patients start coming in for their cleanings or other dental
work as the state goes into the Green Phase, they’ll notice a lot of
changes that will benefit them.
“As dentists, we’ve had to make some changes to comply with OSHA
and the CDC in regards to the types of masks and protective equipment
we use to help mitigate the spread of the COVID virus,” Dr. Crandall said.
“We’ve always practiced universal precautions since the 1990’s, which
address blood born
pathogens, but COVID
is an airborne pathogen
and requires a different
approach. Without
taking these measures,
the aerosols we produce
when doing dentistry
would be more likely
to pass on microbes to
patients and coworkers
throughout the office.”
So, in addition to what
patients are already
used to, they’ll notice
everyone at South Hills
Dental Arts wearing face shields, N95 masks, gowns, shoe coverings and
head coverings. Patients will wait in their cars until their appointment.
Every patient will have a secondary evacuation machine in addition to
the normal intraoral evacuation system used to eliminate excess water
and debris. These secondary units filter air through a HEPA filtration
system to ensure every last bit of aerosolized material is captured.
Some of the things South Hills Dental Arts is doing that patients won’t
notice include additional deep cleanings of all rooms surfaces, using
electrolyze saltwater foggers, which is the same technology used by
major cruise lines to disinfect their ships. This is after every patient
“Electolyzed salt water fog eliminates many types of bacteria and
viruses on the surface of things that are hard to clean or hard to reach
with a wipe,” Dr. Crandall said. Using electrolyzed salt water is not only a
safe, non-irritant, it’s
also a chemical that’s
naturally produced
by the human
body by our own
immune systems.
The material is
so safe, in fact,
that it’s currently
being studied as
an inhalant as a
future treatment for
respiratory infections. South Hills Dental Arts also has an ozone
producing system running during the night when the building is
empty to sterilize the air itself and the all surfaces in the building.
All of this added protection has been at a considerable financial
investment and Dr. Crandall said people have been more than
appreciative and this additional measures have given them the
confidence to return to receive the care that has been put on hold
Dr. Crandall, a Upper St. Clair resident since 1972, founded South
Hills Dental Arts in his own community. That practice has blossomed
into locations in Ingram
and Sewickley to help more
patients, whether they need
a regular check up and
cleaning or more advanced
services like implants,
prosthetics, veneers or
full mouth reconstruction.
They’re also on the forefront
of veneers and cosmetic
dentistry.
