The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh wants to
help make the job of local firefighters easier
with a new program specifically designed
for emergency responders, including police
officers and EMS. “The Fittest Hero” program,
launched earlier this year, challenged 59
firefighters, police officers and paramedics
in Crafton, Kennedy, Robinson and Stowe
townships to participate in a weight loss
challenge Jan. 16 through April 9. Each
participant was assigned a personal trainer
and attended an eight-week nutrition class.
After comparing the group’s original
biometrics, such as blood pressure, waist
measurement, body fat percentage and
Body Mass Index (BMI), with their new
measurements in April, the YMCA discovered
that the group collectively lost a total of 414.8
lbs, with 70 percent of the weight loss results
stemming from changes in their nutrition.
With such success, the YMCA of Greater
Pittsburgh plans to expand this program to
its other branches beginning as early as this
fall, including the Baierl Family YMCA on
Nicholson Road and Western Area YMCA in
Coraopolis.
