H
ealthy muscles can have a variety of benefits, such as greater
strength, better posture and an increase in range of motion and
flexibility. But did you know that maintaining your muscle health
could also help to prevent migraines?
If you suffer from migraines, you know that when one occurs the impact
on your life is relentless. Work is missed, plans are cancelled and your life is
brought to a sudden halt until the throbbing head pain, sensitivity to light
and other symptoms subside. Wouldn’t it be great if there were preventative
measures that could be taken in order to avoid your next migraine? The good
news is, there are - and they could be as simple as making sure your muscles,
especially the muscles of the head and neck, are functioning properly.
Migraines can start as the result of many things, such as stress,
medications and fluctuations in hormones. However, many migraine
sufferers overlook trigger points, or painful points of hypersensitivity in the
muscles, as a causative factor. For example, trigger points in the muscles of
the neck can cause referral patterns of pain that appear in various areas of the

head. Do your migraines appear on the sides of your head just above your
ear? It’s possible that the splenius cervicis muscles, located in the back of
your neck are causing that pain. Or do your migraines commonly occur as
pain behind and around your eye? That’s a common referral pattern for the
sternocleidomastoid muscles located on the sides and front of your neck.
You may be asking yourself, “How am I supposed to care for these
muscles so that I can avoid migraines? It’s not like I can lift weights with
my head and neck!” There’s actually a great deal that can be done to care
for and protect these muscles. At Robinson Chiropractic, we can provide
the following to assess and treat your migraines using therapeutic muscle
management.
