“The best things in life are free, back, breast, and fly,” as stated on the backs of t-shirts worn by
members of the Carlynton varsity boys and girls swim teams. Most swimmers consider the butterfly
stroke to be the most challenging among swimming styles. It requires muscles, endurance
and a defined technique. Not surprising, it’s the preferred stroke of senior Katie Kozy, and she
demonstrated it by setting a new school record when she competed in the 100-yard fly in the
WPIAL championships at the University of Pittsburgh in early March. As a member of the Carlynton
High School varsity swim team, she is the first female in school history to qualify for every WPIAL
swimming event (11) in a single season. Kozy also helped to lead her team to its third consecutive
section title this past season. A 13-year veteran swimmer, she got her start as a member of the
Crafton Crocodiles and plans to continue her swimming career in college. Photo by Annemarie
Bunch, Assistant Athletic Director.
