Canon-McMillan High School recently welcomed Borland Manor Elementary students at our annual " Zoo in the Classroom " day , an innovative program initiated by Chelsea Geist , AP environmental science and zoology teacher . This special day offered elementary students a unique blend of hands-on learning and discovery , highlighting the fascinating world of zoology .
Upon arrival , students stepped into a classroom transformed into a vibrant ecosystem . Interactive stations were set up , each one offering a unique insight into the diverse world of animal life , with over 25 different species on display , including a veiled chameleon , a Japanese giant centipede , and the gentle red-foot tortoise .
Guided by Geist ' s vision , our high school students assumed the role of educators . Their passion for zoology was evident as they introduced the elementary students to the wonders of the animal kingdom . The hands-on interactions with animals , from bearded dragons to crested geckos , turned the lessons into an unforgettable experience , sparking curiosity and discussions about animal behaviors and habitats .
The high school students also led interactive mini-lessons , making learning fun and engaging . They used quick fun facts , crossword puzzles , word searches , and connect-the-dot activities featuring different animals . These educational tools and interactive elements were designed to not only impart knowledge but also actively engage the younger students in a playful and thought-provoking manner , making complex concepts more accessible .
This program was not only a valuable teaching and leadership experience for our high school students but also a part of the College in the High School ( CHS ) program the district has to offer . The zoology Course offers college credit opportunities and covers a wide range of topics from animal physiology to conservation , equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of the field .
As the event wrapped up , the elementary students left with smiles and stories , their minds enriched with new knowledge . For our high school students , it was a day of growth and reflection on the importance of sharing knowledge .
