dance, act like he’s swinging a baseball bat, tell the audience to stand up, and more. He
has a touchscreen on his chest that allows students to control him and/or see their own
faces as they’re watching him. The teacher and students use an iPad to facilitate the
instruction while Milo delivers his lesson.
“He’s really terrific and the kids love him,” says Lieb. “We’re beyond excited to have
welcomed Milo on board and we’ve begun to utilize him to serve our students in our
Autistic Support and Life Skills Support classes at South Central Elementary School. As
well, our speech and language pathologist currently facilitates the instruction one-on-
one with our students.”
Measuring progress with Milo and the students is also of importance to teachers and
administrators.
“Results will be recorded on a quarterly basis, but so far all things point to success,”
according to Lieb. “In addition, we want to educate other staff to work in conjunction
with Milo and ASD students to increase the frequency with which they get to interact
with Milo, which we hope will provide more consistent instruction and achieve quicker
results.”
The Canon-Mac School District and its associated directors, along with the Canon-
Mac Horizon Foundation, have been so happy with Milo that they have secured funds
through a private donor to bring Milo’s sister, Robon, on board. The goal is to reach
all students in the Autistic Support and Life Skills Support programs across all district
buildings and grade levels by year’s end.
In the meantime, Milo is working his magic with the kids and teachers at South
Central Elementary School. He’s brought a helping hand to the teachers with consistent
and repetitive lessons that students with special needs sometimes require, while also
helping the kids overcome some obstacles by making special connections with those
around them, one smile, one wave, one hello at a time.
