WHAT’S NEWS IN CANON-MAC Nick Popielarczyk (left) and Justin Naylor. CM STUDENTS EARN 2017 PONY AWARDS Two Canon-McMillan High School students were winners of the 2017 PONY World Series’ highest individual awards this past August. The PONY World Series, held Aug. 11-16 at Lew Hays PONY Field in Washington, Pa., hosted teams from across the country as well as Mexico, Netherlands, Korea, and Puerto Rico. Justin Naylor, son of Bob and Camille Naylor of Cecil, was the winner of the Easton Sports ERA Award, given to the PONY World Series player with the lowest ERA of the series. In his 81/3 innings pitched, Naylor’s ERA was 0.00. This is the first Easton Sports ERA Award for a Washington County player since 2001. Nick Popielarczyk, son of Gary and Natalie Popielarczyk of North Strabane, was the winner of the Wilson Sporting Goods Batting Title with a .667 batting average for the series. Nick is the first Washington County player to ever receive the award. Popielarczyk was also the winner of the John D. Voytek Memorial Award for having the highest batting average of the Washington County team. This is the first time that two Washington County players have jointly won these awards. ‘DINING AROUND THE POOL’ RAISES MONEY FOR CANONSBURG TOWN PARK POOL The Dining Around the Pool event held on Sept. 9 was the second of its kind—the first was in 2012 when the 8 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE | Canon-Mac pool was in critical need of a new liner. Necessary funds were raised to secure the pool’s future, and with further improvements necessary, it was decided to hold the popular fundraising event again. Only five days after the pool closed for the 2017 season, it was transformed into the perfect venue to celebrate and raise money for continued improvements to the park and pool. Almost 200 guests and friends of the park gathered for the evening, among them PA State Senator Camera Bartolotta, PA State Rep. Brandon Neuman, Washington County Commissioner Harlan Shober, Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome, several council and board members, and, of course, local residents devoted to the efforts. Guests enjoyed a Prime Rib dinner courtesy of Texas Roadhouse, desserts from Bethel Bakery, drinks from Blackcraft Whiskey and Rusty Gold Brewery, and event furniture and necessities from All Occasions Party Rental. Entertainment included live music by Herman Helay and the Tom Terling Band, silent raffle and live auction, caricatures by Clarence Butler, and a release of paper lanterns at the end of the evening. For 82 years, the Canonsburg Town Park and Pool has been an important part of the fabric and quality of life in the borough and a cherished historic landmark of Canonsburg. The park is 52 acres and is a major recreation hub for the community and region, filled with scenic walking paths, pavilions and picnic areas, a brand- new basketball court, ball fields, pickleball courts, skate park and an amphitheater for live summer concerts. And of course there’s the famous Town Park Pool—the size is hard to believe until you see it— with a fountain, diving boards, slides, baby pool, bathhouse and concession stand. Canonsburg Town Park just keeps getting better and better! And many of the area’s new residents aren’t even aware that this gem exists. People moving to places like Southpointe and North Strabane are often unaware of the park since it’s nestled in a scenic valley in the heart of Canonsburg. If you have never been, it’s worth a visit. Canonsburg Town Park is open “dawn to dusk” all year, and the pool is open seven days a week throughout the summer. “Like” it on Facebook at Canonsburg Park and Recreation.
