FRANK SARRIS PUBLIC LIBRARY EDUCATION FOR ALL A message from Peggy Tseng, Library Director Dear friends, It’s summer! Time to break out the swimsuits, sunscreen lotion and books! Yes, that’s right – books. During this season, school- age children and teens are vulnerable to the dreaded “summer learning loss.” Research indicates two months of reading skills and two-and-a-half months of math skills are lost over a single Peggy Tseng, Library Director summer. Students with direct access to books, though, can significantly reduce summer learning loss and retain information from the school year. One easy solution is to take kids and teens to the library regularly. Aside from books and magazines, our library offers access to apps that can be downloaded onto a mobile device or tablet. They’re easy, fast, and you don’t have to worry about leaving them behind at the beach! On Flipster, you can read popular magazines including Time, Reader’s Digest, and People. Libby is an easy way to borrow eBooks, audio books or read-a-long books using Overdrive. Enjoy one of the 1,700 titles in the WAGGIN collection. Don’t forget about Kanopy, an on-demand film streaming service. For more information, check out our Resources page on our website at franksarrislibrary.org. As a reminder, registration for our popular Summer Reading Camp is ongoing. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.” It’s no coincidence this focus on space exploration also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. Class size is limited, so please check availability by calling Frank Sarris Public Library Children’s desk at 724.745.1308 ext. 4. Have a safe and fantastic summer! I’ll see you around town.
