We’ re putting a spotlight on members of the Canon-McMillan community who go above and beyond. Congratulations are in order for:
H Third-grader Jackson Schaeber, firstgrader Collin O’ Brien and third-grader Ruth Pfanstiel. Their artwork was selected to be displayed at the Arts and Chocolate Spectacular art show on April 9 at the Boyce-Mayview Recreation Center. Mrs. Lauren Bizich is the art teacher at Borland Manor Elementary School.
H Borland Manor, Hills-Hendersonville, Cecil and Wylandville Elementary Schools and Cecil Intermediate School for receiving the IU1 Remake Learning Days Grant for showing a strong commitment to celebrating STEM, STEAM, maker and technologyenhanced learning in southwestern Pennsylvania.
H Angela Marasco, middle school teacher, and Dr. Greg Taranto, middle school principal, for the recent AMLE magazine publication about the middle school’ s TOPS class.
H Canon McMillan High School sophomore Devin Kamp, who represented the district in the 2016 Pennsylvania Music Educator Association All State Choir. Students auditioned for this choral ensemble at the District, Region and State Level. Devin is a member of Bella Voce and Men’ s Ensemble at Canon McMillan High School.

H Canon-McMillan Senior, Dominic Gentile, who represented the district in the 2016 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All State Orchestra Ensemble. Students selected for the All State Orchestra were chosen through competitive auditions at the district, region and state level.
H During the school year, both varsity and junior varsity Southwestern Academic League teams posted undefeated regular season records. The JV team went on to win the league tournament, while the varsity team earned the right to compete in the Intermediate Unit 1 tournament held April 6 at Waynesburg University, and matched Canon-Mac against the championship teams from three other leagues in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties. For the second year in a row, our students won the IU championship, and will participate in the State Academic Tournament in Harrisburg on April 29. This year’ s team includes seniors Arjun Mittal( captain) and Charlie Harr, and juniors Andrew Balog, Natalie Cummings, Keegan Decker and Jacob Schoeler.
H The Cecil Intermediate School 5th-grade Team took second-place in the regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition and advanced to the state finals, where they placed fifth. They had to solve a no-cycle,
Literacy Nights a Hit for Canon-Mac Students
This year’ s Literacy Nights at Frank Sarris Public Library were a hit with Canon-McMillan’ s elementary school students – with record-breaking attendance reported at the two-day celebration of reading.
The event, held for students in kindergarten through fourth-grade, included reading-themed activities, games and prizes.
Canon-McMillan’ s elementary school principals were also on hand to read books to attendees( and donated those books to the library afterward). Here are two more snapshots of the fun: recycle problem – to build, ride on, and drive a no-cycle, recycling vehicle. Congratulations to team members Coleton Speer, Scott Downer, Gianna Conti, Riley Skaris, Aaliyah Gilpin, Ethan Bukovinsky and Sam Mascara, as well as their coach, Kristen Speer.
H High school student Nick Fulks, who recently participated in an outreach program as part of the Broken Timber Outdoor Education Center located in Hannibal, Ohio. He conducted a demonstration about fishing, as well as an on-site demonstration of painting fishing baits.
H The CMHS students who recently took second place at the Pennsylvania Envirothon Competition. The students, who had been studying topics in forestry, wildlife, aquatics, invasive species, and soils since September, included: Brittany Bernaciak, Natalie Cummings, Jared Dernoshek, Nick Fulks, Pinar Garbioglu, Marcus Kairush, Jeffrey Kim, Maddison Mollico, Jessica Rodgers, Kayla Ruslavage, Gabrielle Sweitzer, and Rachael Trossman.
H Students in Mr. Tom Nickovich’ s Robotics 2 classes( which focuses on robotics, engineering, and manufacturing) who placed recently in areas robotics competitions after building their own“ battle bots” from scratch.
H Canon-McMillan High School senior Jordan Smith, who was recently recognized as a WPIAL Scholar-Athlete.
