Celebrating the Legacy of Athletic Director Frank Vulcano

Athletic Director( AD) Frank Vulcano helped shape high school athletics at the Canon- McMillan School District for 12 years, strengthening programs and supporting generations of student-athletes.

Canon-McMillan’ s athletic program is one of the largest in the region. Vulcano oversaw 19 sports, 61 schedules and more than 150 coaches and volunteers. He maintained a consistent and direct leadership approach, emphasizing that careful attention to detail creates a strong culture.
Outside of Canon-McMillan, he served more than two decades on WPIAL and PIAA wrestling committees, held leadership roles within the WPIAL Athletic Directors Association, officiated high-level wrestling events, including three NCAA championships and directed the nationally recognized Powerade Wrestling Tournament for 40 years.
When reflecting on his career, Vulcano speaks most highly about the people who support him at Canon- McMillan.
“ This has been one of the best administrations and school boards I’ ve worked with in 39 years,” he said.“ It means a lot to have that type of support and know that they trusted me to run our programs the right way. That kind of backing makes all the difference.”
Under Vulcano’ s leadership, Canon-McMillan earned state championships in girls ' soccer( 2016), baseball( 2018), girls ' wrestling( 2024) and competitive spirit( 2026), along with dozens of WPIAL and section titles.
He also oversaw major facility enhancements, including the stadium locker room complex, turfing of the baseball and softball infields, new bleachers and updated branding across all of the District athletic facilities.
“ Mr. Vulcano is one of the most experienced athletic directors in western Pennsylvania,” Superintendent Dr. Greg Taranto said.“ He leaves big shoes to fill, and we will miss him dearly as he moves on to the next chapter of his life.”
As Vulcano looks forward to retirement, he’ s excited for more family time, with his second grandchild on the way, hoping to travel and slow down a bit. Still, he knows he’ ll stay connected to what has shaped his life.
“ I can’ t see myself not being around sports and this uplifting community of people,” he said.“ It feels like I’ ve been around them my whole life.”
Vulcano hopes his legacy at Canon-McMillan is evident and that all the programs he led continue to flourish for many years to come.

“ This has been one of the best administrations and school boards I’ ve worked with in 39 years. It means a lot to have that type of support and know that they trusted me to run our programs the right way. That kind of backing makes all the difference.”
