What to do, if you have a Sewage Backup at your home? Sewage backups are often caused by an overwhelmed sewer system during heavy rains or a blockage in the system. This can include cracks due to tree roots or blockages from grease, hair, and other solid material buildups in the pipes
If you have a sewage backup at your home, please contact the Authority Offices first during regular business hours at( 724) 745-7220 or 911, anytime or 24 / 7. The Dispatcher will contact the Authority. The Authority will dispatch a crew to assess the situation, which includes determining if the problem is with the sewer main or with the sewer lateral. There is no charge to the resident for this service.
• If the main line is broken or clogged, the Authority is responsible.
• If it is determined the lateral is the problem, the property owner is responsible.
If the problem is in the main line, the Authority will make arrangements for the line to be cleaned( jetted) and / or vacuumed. This will allow for the main line to flow properly and eliminate the backup. There is no cost to the homeowner.
If the problem is in the homeowner lateral, you will be responsible to contact a plumber, who may“ snake” the line, televise and / or flush to allow lateral to flow properly to the main and eliminate the backup.
Preventing Sewage Backups
Do not flush or dump solid materials or oil down the drain, as this can cause blockage. Do not put any of the following items down the drain, even if they claim to be“ safe”, Baby wipes, adult hygiene wipes, disinfectant wipes, cotton balls, swabs, diapers, dental floss, paper towels, cat litter and egg shells. Use a drain catch and throw food scraps in the trash. If you have a grease trap for a drain, clean it regularly. Also, make sure to keep storm drains clean and free of debris.
April Showers bring May Flowers and More Rain
So says the old saying! Sanitary sewer main lines are designed to convey sanitary sewage only from the home to the CHJA Treatment Plant. During wet weather events( rain or snow melt), too much stormwater infiltrates into the sanitary sewer system. The main lines are not designed to handle extra volume of stormwater during heavy rain events. When stormwater enters the main sanitary system, it can cause raw sewage overflows into our waterways and basements. Stormwater is designed to be carried in a separate sewer system and discharged directly into streams and waterways.
Remember … if you have a sewage backup at your home, call North Strabane Township Municipal Authority first, 724-745-7220 or 911.
