United Way’ s century-long history is not just a reflection of its remarkable achievements, but also a testament to its commitment to evolving with the needs of the community. From its humble beginnings, UWWC has grown into a vital force that connects nonprofits, volunteers, donors and community leaders to tackle the root causes of some of society’ s most pressing challenges.
Last year alone, UWWC’ s initiatives affected more than 54,000 lives through the Community Impact Fund. By addressing essential areas such as education, financial stability, and health, UWWC continues to create sustainable change for the betterment of all who call Washington County home.
With gratitude for the achievements of the past 100 years, UWWC is setting its sights on the future. The organization is actively listening to the community to identify emerging needs and implement dynamic strategies to address them. By creating a collaborative environment where everyone can share in the effort, United Way is paving the way for a purposeful and inclusive future.

How United Way Makes a Difference

United Way of Washington County’ s work is multifaceted, involving various programs and initiatives that deliver critical assistance and foster lasting change. Here are some of the standout efforts highlighting the organization’ s impact:
n PA 211 Southwest Resource Helpline
• Over a 12-month period, more than 2,300 neighbors reached out for support, receiving 8,600 referrals.
• This 24 / 7 helpline ensures that anyone in need has access to resources and support at any time of the day or year.
n Emergency Food and Shelter Program
• After an 11-year absence, UWWC stepped up to manage FEMA funds directed to Washington County. Since 2022, this has meant $ 613,842 for local food and shelter programs.
n Care Drives
• Coat Drive / Kids Care Drive / Hygiene Kits Program— these initiatives collect needed supplies to ensure that children start the school year feeling confident and prepared.
n Build A Bike
• Through the efforts of 10 organizations and dedicated volunteers, 100 bikes and helmets were donated to children in need, fostering joy and mobility.
n Holiday Helping Hands
• This program aids senior citizens experiencing loneliness and need during the holiday season, in collaboration with local senior organizations.
n Days of Service
• UWWC’ s Volunteer Connection website( volunteerwashco. org) brings together individuals and groups for service projects. The platform is free for nonprofits to post opportunities, and accessible to the public to find meaningful ways to give back.
n Community Impact Funding
• UWWC’ s Community Impact Fund allocates $ 266,750 to 31 programs from 24 local nonprofits every two years. These grants address education, financial stability, health, and other needs like support of veterans and food insecurity.
• Over the past 25 years, over $ 24 million has been invested in the Washington County community.
