Canon-Mac Spotlight: Recognizing CM Community Members Who Go ABOVE AND BEYOND Congratulations are in order for: H Charlene Rinehart, Borland Manor H H anon-Mac C A NO N- MAC S C HOO L D IS TRI C T N E WS H H H fourth-grade teacher, and Grace Lani, director of curriculum and instruction, who presented at the Keystone State Reading Association Conference on Oct. 22, 2015. The title of their presentation was “Strengthening your ELA Block through Writer’s Workshop.” Cecil Intermediate School, a Title I school from our district, which has met the eligibility criteria to be considered and recognized as a 2015 National Title I Distinguished School for the state of Pennsylvania. Emma Gross, fifth-grade student at Cecil Intermediate School, for being chosen as a winner for the Office of Attorney General’s 2016 Drug-Free Calendar Contest! Her artwork was chosen out of 928 entries and will be featured as the month of May in the 2016 calendar. Three Canon-McMillan student/athletes who signed their letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at Division 1 Universities in the fall. The three seniors are: Tanner Piechnick, who signed with Ohio University for baseball; Linda Rush, who signed with Drexel University for softball; and Becca Turney, who signed with Eastern Michigan for basketball. Three more athletes signed in January: Allison Thomas, who will attend Winthrop University, Liz Hathoway, who will attend Kent State University; and Christian Snatchko, who will attend Robert Morris University. The Canonsburg Middle School “Lit Fest” Team, which earned second place at this year’s Literacy Festival competing against middle schools in Allegheny County. Mrs. Angela Marasco, who won a $500 McDonald’s MAC Grant. The 66 Canon-Mac H H H H H grant money will be used to purchase additional equipment for the Sphero Programming Unit in middle school’s Team Oriented Problem Solving course. The hands-on unit allows Mrs. Marasco to teach coding skills using Sphero bots which makes the experience quite engaging. Ms. Gretchan Haddox, who won a $500 McDonald’s MAC Grant. The grant money will be used to purchase iPads and to help facilitate learning at North Strabane Intermediate School. Canonsburg Middle School, which raised $1,000 for the Canonsburg Food Pantry during its annual dodgeball tournament. Mr. Chris Fee and his high school students, who were recognized for visiting and donating $200 to the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh. Four students from North Strabane Intermediate who have been chosen by application to represent the school at the 2016 PMEA District 1 Singfest West Festival on Friday, March 4 at Baldwin High School. Sixth-grade students Alia M., Anna H., Anna S., and Lindy S. will participate in the day-long festival aimed at improving singing skills and developing leadership among choral singers. The event will feature chorus students from more than 40 elementary schools in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Cecil Intermediate School 5th-grade student Emma Gross, who won the Drug-Free Calendar Contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. The contest was open to all fifth-grade students in the state, and Emma was one of 12 winners selected from about 1,000 entries that illustrated a message about staying drug free. Each of the 12 winners will have their artwork featured on the calendar (Emma’s work will be featured in the month of May). Emma’s day in Harrisburg started with a luncheon at the Attorney General’s office, where she met Kathleen Kane and received her award and a Go Pro waterproof camera. From there, she and her family were treated to a tour of the Capitol, where state Rep. Brandon Neuman (a Canon-Mac alum) presented Emma with a special award - and even invited her down to the House floor. Emma also appeared on the KDKA news broadcast for her accomplishment. H Superintendent Michael Daniels, who was recognized Jan. 14 by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators in honor of his completion of the PASA Superintendent’s Academy. The academy is designed to provide practical experience to chief school administrators in the areas of ethical leadership, effective communication skills and use of data to inform decision-making. H School Director Joseph Zupancic, who was recently appointed to the House Resolution 540 (Zero Tolerance School Discipline Policies) advisory committee.
