The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a 35-mile-long urban and suburban trail system that winds through Allegheny County , providing both a scenic and practical route for a variety of activities just waiting to be enjoyed by all as the fall foliage makes its way into our area . Spanning the banks of the Allegheny , Monongahela and Ohio rivers , this trail is a vital part of Pittsburgh ’ s landscape , serving as both a recreational hotspot and a non-motorized transportation route .

Developed and maintained by the nonprofit organization Friends of the Riverfront , the trail has been a significant force in Pittsburgh ’ s riverfront revitalization since 1991 . This nonprofit not only maintains the trail but also actively builds and expands it .
The trail accommodates a wide range of activities , including biking , inline skating , walking , running , and for some , even commuting to and from work . It ’ s also a popular spot for fishing , with more than
30 boat launches providing easy access for kayaks , canoes and other non-motorized watercraft . The adjacent Three Rivers Water Trail features about 30 river access points , allowing users to explore the waterways of the Allegheny , Ohio , Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers .
Visitors can also enjoy some especially unique experiences along the trail . The Baldwin Borough segment offers views of the famous Hays bald eagles , who nest in the same spot each year . Rowing teams often practice at the south end of Washington ’ s Landing , adding to the enjoyable activity along the trail . The South Side segment is home to Color Park — a legal graffiti area that showcases vibrant street art — while the Chateau segment is near Bicycle Heaven , the world ’ s largest bicycle museum .
The trail is also lined with numerous dining and shopping options , from ice cream parlors to restaurants , making it easy for users to find refreshments and meals . This combination of recreational and commercial spaces enhances the trail ’ s appeal and accessibility .
An economic impact study completed by Friends of the Riverfront revealed that in 2023 , the Three Rivers Heritage Trail hosted 1.3 million trips , generated $ 16 million in earnings for local workers , and had a $ 26.5 million economic impact . These numbers underscore the trail ’ s importance to the local economy and community .
The trail is designed to be user-friendly , with most segments being 10 feet wide and having a gentle 1 to 2 percent grade , although there are occasional steeper sections . About 90 percent of the trail is paved , ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all users .
The Three Rivers Heritage Trail and Water Trail not only offer recreational and transportation opportunities , but also provide a unique mix of nature and industrial history . Plan your visit today ! For more information and maps , visit friendsoftheriverfront . org . n
