NSIS 6th grader Madelynn Dexter is a rising martial arts star from Canonsburg .

Twelve-year-old Madelynn “ Maddy ” Dexter , a 6th grader at North Strabane Intermediate School , is rapidly becoming an impressive presence in the world of martial arts . Maddy began her journey at the age of 7 with ATA McMurray Martial Arts , training under Master Cameron Stadtfeld . She has already earned her 1st Degree Black Belt and is on her way to obtaining her 2nd Degree . Despite her young age , Maddy ’ s passion for martial arts has led her to excel both on and off the mat .
“ I started martial arts because both of my brothers — Brayden and Peyton — were involved and I looked up to them ,” says Maddy . “ They are both 2nd Degree Black Belts but are now pursuing other sports opportunities . I ’ ve continued to love it , and the students and instructors in the academy have become like family .”
Balancing her Taekwondo and Xtreme Martial Arts training with gymnastics at the Katrina Thomas Academy , Maddy has proven her dedication by training five to six days a week . She competes in multiple events including traditional forms , sparring , combat sparring , creative forms and xtreme forms .
Her commitment to excellence was rewarded in 2024 when she claimed PA State Championship titles in xtreme forms and creative forms . Maddy also secured the District Championship in xtreme forms and earned 2nd and 3rd place at the National Championships . Her success didn ’ t stop there — she also achieved a remarkable 2nd place ranking in the world for xtreme forms during the 2023-2024 season .
“ I love to compete in tournaments and my goal is to become a world champion someday ,” says Maddy . “ I ’ m inspired by the world champions at my academy and love the show ‘ Cobra Kai .’ I recently went to Steel City Con and was able to meet the actor who plays Sam and a few other cast members , including Sensei Kreese ( played by Martin Kove ). It was an awesome experience .”
As the next season begins , Maddy continues to shine , earning top finishes in various events , including a 2nd place in sparring and xtreme forms at the World Championships season opener in Phoenix . With a full tournament schedule ahead , she is poised to continue her impressive journey , while still taking time to participate on teams and help at the academy as a trainee instructor .
Her achievements exemplify discipline , perseverance and passion for martial arts , making her a true inspiration to her peers . n
