‘ HUMANS OF NEW YORK ’ -STYLE BOOK FEATURES PORTRAITS OF 412 FOOD RESCUE VOLUNTEERS
On the opening page of 412 Food Rescue ’ s new book , “ Love is # FREE : 100 Food Rescue Hero Stories to Inspire ,” are two quotes : one from Rachel Carson , about the importance of feeling over knowing , and one from Fred Rogers , about community .
The legacy of these two inspiring Pittsburghers is being carried on by the volunteers featured in the book , all of whom are part of the Food Rescue Hero network that has rescued and redistributed nearly 20 million pounds of food since the organization was founded . This includes during the COVID-19 pandemic , which significantly worsened food and nutrition insecurity in the U . S .
The volunteer portraits were captured by photographer Chancelor Humphrey , creator of Keep Pittsburgh Dope . Baron Batch created the cover and art throughout the book , and Veronica Corpuz wrote an original poem , “ Ode to 100 Heroes ,” for the project . The 221-page , full-color book is available for general sale .
412 Food Rescue ’ s vice president of advancement and engagement , Sara Swaney , explains why the local nonprofit chose to honor volunteers in this way : “ Our volunteers are our lifeblood . We could not do what we do without the generosity of 12,000 Pittsburghers who have stepped up to help their neighbors as Food Rescue Heroes . After such a difficult year , we wanted to celebrate them and immortalize the indescribable impact they have had on our city with this book and these portraits .”
COLUMBIA GAS REMINDS CUSTOMERS ON 8 / 11 TO CALL 811 BEFORE DIGGING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
In conjunction with National 811 Day on August 11 , Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania hopes that 8 / 11 on the calendar served as a natural reminder for residents to call 811 or visit PAOneCall . org at least three business days before any digging project to have underground utility lines marked .
With the summer weather and more people spending time at home , homeowners turn to do-it-yourself work in and around their yards . National 811 Day is the perfect opportunity to remind folks of the importance of calling 811 before they dig .
In 2020 , 14 % of damages occurred due to the failure to call 811 before a digging project . The primary causes of damages were due to fence installations and landscaping projects . If you contact
811 before you dig , there ’ s a less than one percent chance of damaging a utility line . When calling 811 , homeowners and contractors are connected to Pennsylvania 811 , which notifies the appropriate utility companies of their intent to dig . Requests can also be made online at PAOneCall . org . Professional locators then arrive at the digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags , spray paint , or both . This service is provided free of charge for homeowners .
An underground utility line is damaged every few minutes because someone dug without first contacting 811 . Striking a single line can cause injury , repair costs , inconvenient outages , and fines . With more people at home and relying on their utilities to work and communicate , inconvenient outages are important to avoid .
Every digging project , no matter how big or small , warrants contacting 811 by phone or online . Installing a mailbox , building a deck , planting a tree , and putting in a patio are just some examples of projects that need a call to 811 or a visit to PAOneCall . org before starting .

“ The Labouré Ladies Guild ( formerly the DeMarillac Guild of St . Louise de Marillac Parish ) is scheduled to hold its annual “ Joy of Christmas ” Craft Show on Saturday , Nov . 20 , from 9 a . m . to 3:30 p . m ., at St . Louise de Marillac School and LeGras Parish Center , 320 McMurray Road , Upper St . Clair .
