CELEBRATING A SUCCESSFUL SUMMER SEASON

As the lazy days of summer come to an end , we celebrate a successful summer season while also looking forward to the crisp and colorful autumn ahead .

The CTP Pool had a banner season , with 60 private parties , busy Night Swim sessions , and over 100 kids participated in swim lessons . During a summer where many local pools opened late , closed early or didn ’ t open at all , we remained open the entire season employing 42 life guards , providing the community with a place to enjoy the outdoors , beat the heat and create lifelong memories .
Camp Splash also had a wonderful turnout with an average of 75 campers per week . Most of the campers came from the tri-state area but this year the camp had several campers who were from New Jersey , New York and Harrisburg visiting family and friends in the area . The camp had 17 counselors on staff who brought many talents and skills to our campers . Daily , the campers enjoyed outdoor activities such as basketball , pickleball , playground , 4-square and skate park and many more outdoor activities with a delicious catered lunch by Krency ’ s Bakery and three hours of swimming . The campers also enjoyed guests such as Penn State Extensions , Texas Roadhouse , Artist , Victoria Scoumis , and the Canonsburg Fire Department . Camp Splash continues to be an affordable ,
safe and fun place for children to enjoy the Summer . Many thanks to our sponsors who supported Camp Splash making it affordable to the families .
A huge shout out and THANK YOU to the Canon McMillan Wrestlers and Coach Brian Krenzelak for offering to paint the bathrooms in our historic Pool House . This was a giant project and their volunteer efforts were beyond appreciated . We now have a fresh new look both inside and outside the Pool House .
Looking forward to the fall season here at CTP , we are full of recreation opportunities . The park amenities , pavilions and playgrounds will continue to thrive throughout the fall , from basketball and softball to pickleball and the skate park , there is something for everyone to enjoy . We are also once again planning a fantastic bonfire for October 16th , with a DJ and movie , along with snacks and s ’ mores on the fire . Please join us for this anticipated fall event that is intended to bring the community together to celebrate our beautiful park .

What Happened to the Trees on Pike Street ?

BY LISA SCARMAZZI , DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The question has been asked by many …“ Why were the trees removed along Pike Street ?” I can assure you ; it is not because we don ’ t like trees ! In fact , it ’ s because the borough believes in the important role that trees play in our community , that the decision was made to remove the former trees .

The pear species chosen to line our sidewalks was not favorable for
an urban location . The growth habit was one that low and wide which interfered with pedestrian sidewalk traffic , the viewing of the downtown business facades and most importantly , they reached out into the street , being struck by trucks traveling along Pike Street .
After consultations with a certified Penn State Arborist , species
were identified that are appropriate for this setting and a grant application through TreePennsylvania has recently been submitted for replacements . Between the new building facades , businesses , and healthy street trees , our downtown district will soon be alive and vibrant !
